IRONTON — The state champion 9-10 year-old Shelby Little League baseball players will celebrate Friday’s 8-1 victory over Canfield with a parade this evening at 7 p.m.
The festivities will start with a police escort beginning near the intersection of Mansfield Avenue and Seneca Drive.
The parade will proceed down Mansfield Avenue and then Broadway before coming to a close at McBride Field.
Fans and family are urged to line the street and congratulate the champions.
TITLE NO. 2 — Shelby Little League’s other championship team was a 13-year-old junior division team in 1989. Another junior division squad finished as a state runner-up in 1999.
CONNECTED — Mason Noland, a member of the team, had an uncle, Ryan ‘Rhino’ Noland, play on the 1989 state championship team. Mason’s dad, Brad, was also part of the 2010 all-star coaching staff.
LENDING AN ASSIST — The local business community helped the all-stars with their week’s worth of expenses and they included Citizens Bank, Arcelor Mittal and Steelworkers Union Local 3057. Shelby Little League also helped out.
Money went toward purchasing food that was prepared for the players and their families. During the week, they had a taco night, a cookout with hamburgers and hotdogs as well as a pizza party
“We had at least one meal a day together during the week,” said Shelby manager Dan Parrigan.
RELAXING — By winning the winner’s bracket, Shelby earned the luxury of not playing Wednesday or Thursday while those still slugging it out in the loser’s bracket also had to deal with oppressive heat and humidity.
One evening the team went bowling and another day was spent fishing for catfish.
