SHELBY -- Though the worldwide coronavirus pandemic led to cancellation of Shelby High School homecoming dance, a parade is planned to celebrate homecoming.

The announcement was made via a statement from the school and posted on the internet via its Twitter account.

Events set for the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 30 include the Homecoming Parade and Crowning Ceremony.

"The parade will begin at 7 p.m.," the  announcement reads. "Participants will line up starting at 6:30 pm on Seltzer Avenue/Grand Blvd."

The parade is to begin at the Seltzer Avenue/Main Street intersection, head west on Main Street to Gamble Street and head south on Gamble Street to Skiles Field.

Parade participants are to include the Shelby High School band, king and queen candidates, fall sports teams and Shelby police and fire.

"King and queen candidates will be driven in cars by a family member," the announcement reads. "The band and other participants will walk the route. Parade participants will be required to wear masks and distance themselves."

"Parade spectators will be asked to wear masks and must distance themselves along the parade route," the announcement continues. "The band, (homecoming) Court, students and family members of the Court will continue into Skiles Field."

The crowning ceremony, to be held at Skiles Field, will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the parade to allow everyone to enter the stadium, according to the announcement.

"All spectators will be seated in the home, visitors or portable bleachers," it states. "All spectators must wear a mask and maintain appropriate social distancing in the stands. Family members can sit in groups, but everyone else must maintain 6 feet distance from each other."

Other details in the announcement:

* Each member of the court will receive tickets for the ceremony for family members.

* All Shelby High School students will be permitted to attend.

* After the court is introduced, the homecoming king and queen will be announced and will address the crowd.

"The fall sports captains would address the crowd to talk about their seasons and the band will play a couple of songs," the announcement concludes. "Everyone will be dismissed, using multiple gates to avoid congregating."
