Levi Robertson, a Shelby local, and his partner Chris Stone from Vacaville, California are both cat lovers. Robertson has Pancake, Waffle, and Oatmeal and Stone has Pixel, Cinnamon, and Buddy the Gaming Cat. They are also both lovers of board games. In fact, the two met playing board games online together. The couple decided to meld their two interests and come up with a game based on one of the biggest struggles cat owners have with their fur babies: putting them into the carrier to go to the vet. Hissy Fit! is a card game you can play alone or with three friends where you work to corral your cat.
Here is the overview of Hissy Fit! from the Kickstarter page:
“In this cooperative card game of carefully-coordinated cat coaxing, you and your partner are humans trying to get your cat into the carrier. Be careful, or this trip to the vet could turn into a trip to the emergency room! To win, you must guide the cat along the path and into the carrier by using treats, distractions and strategies from the Human Cards. Plan your actions, dress your wounds, and build combos to thwart the cat’s defenses and steadily lead it into the carrier before time runs out. But each turn, Cat Cards are drawn to make the cat run, hide, scratch, or have a total conniption! If the cats have too many ‘Hissy Fits’ or you suffer too many scratches, the cat wins.”
Robertson and Stone have been funding their project through crowdfunding. They have been using the website Kickstarter to fund their project. So far, Hissy Fit! has 418 backers and counting. They hope to continue raising money for the project so they can have the game manufactured and then shipped to everyone who has supported the project. For every 200 copies of the game sold, they will sponsor a cat adoption up to $200. So far, they have sponsored two cat adoptions and there should be another soon.
At https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1254790798/hissy-fit-0, you can see every little detail about the Hissy Fit! project and the different backing levels. You can also visit the Kickstarter site and search the name of the game. If you give $100 towards the project, you get a full copy of the game and their artist will turn a photo of your cat into one of their custom cat meeple stickers that will be included in every copy of the game! If you give $300 towards the project, you will get a full copy of the game and their artist will turn a photo of your cat into an illustration on a card that will be in every copy of the game.
The page also includes how-to-play videos, bios on all the team members, previews and reviews from popular YouTube channels, merch like mugs, t-shirts, pins, and candles, and more! Robertson explained that they had a specific idea in mind for the art for Hissy Fit!, which they wanted to be semi-realistic but exaggerated. They met their artist, Suchada Boonsong from Bangkok, Thailand on Pinterest. However, she does not speak any English so all their communications were translated through her boyfriend. “I love her art, it’s super cool,” said Robertson.
Robertson and Stone are big supporters of people getting back into playing more board games, especially adults. Their company, Stone Age Distractions, is a play on Stone’s last name and the fact that board games are classic and an “older” form of entertainment. Robertson attributes his love of board games to living in Shelby because the small town lacked a lot of entertainment when he was younger. “You had the opportunity to have more face-to-face interactions,” he said.
Hissy Fit! will be the perfect game for any cat lover, or lovers of fast-paced games in general. The project page only has 16 days to go! Head over to Kickstarter today and check out the game and support a Shelby community member’s awesome project!
