A look at Skiles Field as shown earlier this season.

The Shelby Whippets were defeated by West Holmes on Friday night at Skiles Field.

West Holmes, the leaders of the Ohio Cardinal Conference, had brought a 7-0 record into the contest and are ranked fifth in this week's Division III state poll.

The Whippets, who are the two-time defending Mid Ohio Athletic Conference champions, stand at 6-2 on the season. Prior to the West Holmes game, Shelby had put together a four-game winning streak since losing at Bellevue back on Sept. 3.

This was the first time the two schools had met on the football field.

They were scheduled to meet in 2020, but that game was canceled when the regular season was reduced to six games due to COVID-19.

“Obviously, this is the best team we have played since Bellevue,” noted SHS coach Rob Mahaney earlier this week.
