Hopefully by now you have heard that 14 of the downtown Shelby businesses are participating in a “St. Patrick’s Day crawl” on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18. You can pick up a punch card at any of the businesses and get it punched at all the participating businesses. Be sure to return it at least 80% full for a chance to win a gift card from each of the participating businesses.
Brian Crum, the City of Shelby’s Director of Finance & Public Record, shared how the idea for this event came to be: “A few months ago, the downtown food and entertainment venues got together as we felt it would be beneficial to plan joint events to get more people downtown. Of course, it is too early in the season for the mini golf, but personally, I try really hard to shop and dine downtown, so I have gotten to know many of the shop owners and experienced much that they have to offer,” he said.
Crum continued, “People don’t realize just how much we have going on. I was born in this town just as ‘the glory days’ of downtown were beginning to fade. I think there are more options to spend your time downtown now than there have been in my life. One could easily spend a day trying great food and beverages, learning to paint, creating candles, playing mini golf and arcade games, etc. So with this program, I am asking our residents to give the downtown a chance.”
He concluded, “Stop in the businesses (even if you aren’t making a purchase) to get your punch card signed, and while you are there take it in. I think that people will be surprised at the quality of our venues and experiences. We can do so much more, but it is going to take the support of our neighbors. If this is successful, I know that the businesses will continue to put on bigger and better events and expand offerings. So I think this can be a win for everyone.”
Each of the 14 participating businesses are offering specials, sales, and some are even extending their regular business hours to bring in the most business. Jessica Gribben, Shelby’s Economic Development Manager, shared her thoughts on the event: "I am so excited to see the downtown businesses band together to put on an awesome St. Patrick's Day event. I hope Shelby will come out in force to support their downtown friends and enjoy a fun night of food, music, and retail therapy! Add in a chance to win gift cards to your favorite venues, and it looks like you will find your pot of gold in Shelby this St. Paddy's day!"
